Day Trip to Charleston

One of my favorite things about our new home in SC is that we're within driving distance of some pretty amazing places. Back where I lived in Iowa, you could drive for hours from the cornfields and see more... corn. Now, I'm not hating—there's a lot to love about the Midwest. But here, we can drive for hours and see beaches, mountains... ah! So many things!

And one of my favorite "things" to see and experience is Charleston. From the architecture to the charm to the shopping to the food—there's just so much to love. And I know I should say I enjoy the history too, not just because Charleston is rich with it and it's so important, but because it would make me sound very smart and cultured. And stuff.

But I have a confession for you: I am not a huge history buff. I know it's important. I think there's a quote about how if you don't know history, it'll just repeat itself? I joke that history could go ahead and repeat itself, and I wouldn't know the difference.

Bad joke?

It's not that I don't appreciate history; it's that my brain just can't contain it. Seriously. I read the same thing over and over again, and my brain is just like, "Nope, we don't want you to remember when this war happened, or if it even did. We want you to look stupid when it gets brought up in conversation. Oh, and we want you to feel bad that your 8-year-old son knows more history details than you do."

Gee, thanks, brain.

But what may seem ironic is that historical fiction is one of my favorite genres to read. I guess my brain can't understand textbooks, but it can understand stories. So most of what I learn is from novels. Let's just hope the author stays true to the story, though, because they could add in some fan fiction, and I wouldn't know the difference!

I'd be in a conversation with someone, and we'd be talking about World War II, and I'd remember a book I'd read and say, "But yeah, too bad about those dinosaurs, huh?"

Yep, that’s exactly how it’d go.

Okay, I didn’t mean to go down that rabbit trail. But now that I set up this amazing segue for myself (I, in fact, did not), let’s keep scrolling to see…

Beautiful Charleston!
